The teenager stole the bus early Friday morning from the garage of a public transportation company, local police said. He opened the vehicle without using force and started it with a key.

The missing bus – noticed late

"We still don't know how he got his hands on the key and how he got so good at driving," a police spokesman said. It's also unclear why he took his 14-year-old girlfriend to school in this unusual - and of course, forbidden - way.

The bus, which had been refueled overnight, was noticed missing at around 6:00 a.m. But because people at the garage initially assumed that one of the drivers had simply taken a vehicle with the wrong license plate, the incident was only reported to the police around noon that day.

The teenager is accused of theft.

The search ended in Karlsruhe, where a police patrol spotted the vehicle. The 15-year-old had picked up his girlfriend shortly before law enforcement intervened.

The teenager was charged with theft and driving without a license. Police took him to his guardians – and the bus was recovered without a scratch.
