60 years of Lamborghini Miura - the car that changed the course of history

The man who made this car drank two bottles of wine a day and smoked like a chimney. He always walked with his shirt open, with wounds on his arms and elbows. He doesn't remember ever wearing a tie, his shoes were always dusty, his clothes were extremely careless. He ate everything that could be eaten with his hands. 60 years of Lamborghini Miura - the car that changed the course of history

The car that this man built is naked. It has no bumpers, no door frames, no seat belts, no exhaust controls, no speed limit. This car is hard to get into and even harder to get out of. In the summer it turns into a sauna, and only at idle are the finest folds of the human ear able to detect a noise that seems to come from the underground. Not everyone is perfect…

Nevertheless, the man and the car became immortal legends during their lifetime, despite all their weaknesses and technical imperfections. And this might never have happened if it had not affected the image of none other than Enzo Ferrari himself...

Ferruccio Lamborghini – the son of ordinary peasants from the fertile Po Valley near Bologna – managed to accumulate a lot of money after the war from the production of agricultural machinery and tractors. It was so much money that he could easily buy as many Ferrari cars as he wanted. But the joy of super-fast sports cars was always overshadowed by the mistakes of the sensitive machines. It was because of them that he decided to go personally to Enzo Ferrari to make him a few specific suggestions for improvements. But instead of attention and understanding, he received an unexpectedly arrogant response. Ferrari, however, did not realize at all what kind of person he had come across. Ferruccio Lamborghini was deeply affected, but also strongly motivated to make his own sports car that suited his taste. And then his motto became: “Make them better than Ferrari’s!”

Thus, for a very substantial sum, Lamborghini managed to hire the best technicians and designers from Maserati, Alfa Romeo and even Ferrari, who created the first serial models under the Lamborghini brand – the 350 GTV and 400 GT. They were the basis of his first success, as they turned out to be very good, spectacular and extremely fast. But still not as good and elitist as those of Ferrari. Then Ferruccio decided to develop his own transmission mechanisms and bridges. Of key importance for the success of this undertaking is that he left complete creative freedom to the three young men involved in this responsible task. Thus, in 1965, a unique car was completed and presented to the public, overshadowing everything known up to that point in the world of luxury sports cars – the Miura P 400.

The car was designed by Italians Giampaolo Dallara and Paolo Stanzani, and New Zealander Bob Wallace. All three were under 25 years old and were strongly inspired by Ferruccio Lamborghini's life goal, which boils down to the motto: "Do everything better than Ferrari!" According to the unanimous opinion of experts, it became an indisputable fact with the appearance of the Lamborghini Miura. This is evidenced not only by its unique technical indicators, but also by a number of precisely designed details, for example, the characteristic openings in the doors through which cooling air enters. Ferruccio Lamborghini modestly states that he is not an expert either when it comes to Ferrari or his own cars. But while he is alive, he never fails to personally demonstrate his trick with a cigarette placed upright on the cylinder block of the Miura, which does not fall even when the two camshafts are turned and the wild sound of 350 horses is felt. Then he proudly exclaims: "Ferrari never managed to achieve this!".

Over a period of about 5 years (1965 to 1970), a total of 765 Miuras were produced - a car that was only made once because it was created by Ferruccio Lamborghini, in whose veins flows "la sangue di Miura" - the hot blood of the fighting bull.
