BMW 730d: pleasure at a bargain price (retrospection)
What Bulgaria wrote 20 years ag piese auto online.

It turns out that luxury doesn't have to be expensive. A used BMW 730d allows you to get significantly closer to your dream of comfort - and at a very reasonable price...
It is no secret that large luxury limousines are of interest to the average car enthusiast with a normal income primarily because of the dizzying pace of their depreciation – after just three or four years of operation, the price of most vehicles in this class drops below half of their original price. BMW’s “seven” with the internal factory designation E65 is no exception to this rule – today, four years after its debut, a large number of leased copies with very attractive prices are starting to pour into the secondary market.
Why, instead of a new "three", shouldn't one get a used "seven"? The question is quite interesting, and the offer - quite tempting... The automatic transmission, genuine leather upholstery and navigation system are something completely common in luxury vehicles of this rank, and the higher level of comfort is something that goes without saying.
At the same time, it is not necessary that the maintenance of the limousine be insanely expensive. The most preferred engine for the "seven" is the three-liter diesel (both in new and used vehicles), and whether it will work under the hood of the fifth or seventh series has almost no practical significance for the costs of operation and maintenance.
Sometimes diesels fail due to a failure in the high pressure pump.
However, this unit is not completely devoid of weaknesses. First of all, we should mention the Common Rail fuel injection pump, which is responsible for quite a few accidents on the road. At the beginning of the year, a service campaign was held, as the subcontractor Bosch had to eliminate certain problems with the reliability of the pumps. Usually, the turbocharger is extremely reliable, but in rare cases, the guide vanes can become blocked, and sometimes the turbine wheel can fail. Situations in which the cause of the damage and malfunctions can be found in amateur chip tuning are not completely excluded.
From time to time, leaks in the fuel injection system are also observed, as well as cases of burning out of the cylinder head gasket. As a rule, the latter failure is preceded by loss of coolant due to a leak from the water pump and is a problem that affects not only the diesel, but also the eight-cylinder gasoline engine in the 735i and 745i models, which generally have a reputation for reliability. The only need for regular replacement in them is the heavily loaded belt for driving the auxiliary units.
We definitely wouldn't recommend the V-shaped eight-cylinder diesel in the 740d model, because in their quest to overtake Mercedes in the prestigious competition for the most powerful diesel in a passenger car, the Bavarians squeezed the 3.9-liter "eight" to the limits of its capabilities - eloquent evidence in this regard are the cases of cracked cylinder blocks...
As for the rare 12-cylinder unit of the 760i, practical reviews about it are so few that they cannot serve as the basis for a serious recommendation.
However, it is now certain that the E65 suffers from premature wear of the chassis, and the excess weight has an extremely adverse effect on the articulated joints. The most vulnerable as a result of driving on bad roads are the transverse arms of the rear axle, while on the front, the main problems are caused by the play in the joints.
Electronics poisonings only decreased after 2003
The mandatory six-speed ZF automatic transmission definitely works more reliably than its “colleague” from the previous model, and oil leaks are observed very rarely. Electronics malfunctions occur much more often - in this regard, the “seven” is no exception. Disturbances in the fuel pump control caused particular trouble, which led to “skipping” in the engine operation or even to its shutdown. The source of the problems was eliminated by conducting a service campaign to update the engine software, but unfortunately it was not the last - in 2004 there were again problems with the engine control unit, and a little later - with the excessively strong seat heating. However, after all, complaints about the electronics decreased after 2003. Apparently, then BMW specialists finally managed to curb the rebellion of bytes...
