The Mini diesel engine is really mini – small displacement, low fuel consumption, but also very few sales. Only 8% choose the diesel version, which is very surprising against the background of the diesel euphoria that has gripped everyone in Germany. This percentage is mini for any small car manufacturer, but what can be done? To increase sales of the diesel version, BMW has increased the power of the Common-Rail engine by 13 hp, and it is now 88 hp instead of 75 hp before, fuel consumption is only 4.9 l/100 km, acceleration is noticeably more agile. Sounds good, right?

Despite all this, the new diesel disappointed us a little at first, because it is a little weak when starting off. Only when the revs increase does the driving pleasure increase, especially in the city. On the other hand, the 4-liter unit is extremely quiet, it works silently like a gasoline engine. The subjective feeling of noise is Mini-small, according to measurements, the diesel version is no noisier than the gasoline version Mini One with 90 hp. This is a serious achievement for this diesel engine, which was supplied by Toyota both before and after the modernization.

To extract more power from the 1.4-liter engine and still meet the Euro 4 emissions standard, engineers have changed the engine management settings and increased the turbo pressure. However, they have neglected to add a particulate filter (soot), which is why we took maximum points away from the Mini. However, they have added a lot of “decorations” to the exterior, some genuine leather and new seat upholstery. The Seven model is also distinguished by many stylized “sevens” under the side indicators, on the black door sills and on the tailgate. The trademark of this model is the leather steering wheel, air conditioning, “Wave” radio and the “Solar Red” color.

All this at the typical Mini price. The D Seven model will cost 18,550 euros, so compared to the gasoline (90 hp, 16,900 euros) the diesel version will be economically profitable only with an annual mileage of over 20,000 km. Otherwise, our impressions of the new diesel Mini are wonderful – confident and agile, with great brakes, light and precise gear shifting, perfect road behavior. All typical Mini things, now with “diesel power”.
