Nostalgia for the 5 cylinders
New Volvo diesel in three economical versions – here's what Bulgaria wrote 20 years ago (retrospection magazin de piese auto online.

The fundamentally revised 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine from Volvo, the Swedish subsidiary of Ford, will debut simultaneously in three power variants and with a diesel particulate filter included as standard equipment in the S60, V70, XC 70 and XC 90 model series. According to the manufacturer, the filter is maintenance-free, does not need additives and has a service life equal to that of the car itself.
The version with the lowest power has 126 hp, the middle version has 163 hp, and the new top-of-the-range D5 engine now offers a power of 185 hp. The increase compared to the previous 163 hp is reflected excellently, first of all, in the extremely well-performing, but somewhat cumbersome in terms of dynamic characteristics, SUV XC 90. The advanced five-cylinder turbodiesel with a third-generation Common Rail direct fuel injection system meets the requirements of the Euro 4 eco-standard and provides noticeably more power to the heavy Swedish car. The improved dynamics are not so much noticeable when starting off as in intermediate acceleration mode, where the torque, which has increased to 400 FIm (340 FIm before), gets a great opportunity to demonstrate its muscles. According to official Volvo data, the new diesel SUV does not consume more fuel despite the increase in dynamics, and on the German market the surcharge for all modifications of the XC 90 D5 (engine, particulate filter, new six-speed gearbox and improved all-wheel drive system) will be a modest amount of 650 euros. From autumn, the model will also be available with a six-speed automatic transmission for an additional fee.
Of course, the five-cylinder turbodiesel plays a completely different role in the significantly lighter S60. The engine literally gives wings to the Swedish competitor to the Bavarian “troika” and helps it reach a top speed of 230 km/h, while adhering to quite low and discreet levels in terms of acoustics. This Volvo model should consume an average of just 6.6 l/100 km, but the increase in its price compared to the previous version of the S60 D5 (with a particulate filter and six-speed gearbox included in the standard equipment) is 1350 euros.
