Ten popular SUVs that fail the roadworthiness test – here's our review!

Kia Sportage (EL/SL)

Error rate after 12-13 years: 34.7% (Ø 28.1%).

The Kia Sportage, produced between 2010 and 2015, only becomes a serious problem as it ages. With below-average scores for defects in the environmental section (oil leaks, emissions test and exhaust system condition), the Korean SUV has demonstrated pleasant durability during TÜV technical inspections. Not so pleasant, however, are the numerous complaints due to defective hand brakes, with the values being more than four times higher than the average. Wheel bearings, crossmembers, stabilizer bars and tie rods are often the subject of complaints. Significantly higher levels of damage are also reported due to worn steering knuckles. And with the exception of the low beam, the lighting scores are always above the average for the class. Before buying, potential buyers should also take a look at the brake discs, which after 12 or 13 years wear out twice as often as in an average car.
