Used car inspection: Porsche 911 (992)

The first 911 is a milestone. Decades of dreams, childhood memories and a constant fascination with the design, technology and sound of the six-cylinder boxer engine ultimately come together in the desire to own a 911.

But that emotional charge has the potential to lead to destructive decisions. The best example: the 996. As the first water-cooled 911, it's the most affordable ticket into the world of the 911. Prices starting at 40,000 BGN, however, should be seen less as a temptation than as a warning sign of serious deferred maintenance.

To avoid a bad purchase, here is the basic information you need. Before you buy, however, you should seek expert advice. Two such experts are Dennis Neumann from 9ELF Hamburg and Tobias Ludwig from Oettinger Autotechnik. With their help, we have summarized the most important weaknesses of the last five 911 generations.

prices: from 200,000 BGN.

Porsche is digitizing the 911, but a simple digital instrument cluster would be a bit too much – so the rev counter remains in the center and is analog. Many things are borrowed from the 991 – apart from the 3.0-liter turbocharged engines, the wheelbase is also unchanged.

The even faster-shifting eight-speed PDK transmission is new. This contributes to the 992's relaxed character: at 1,000 rpm, this 911 moves smoothly, as long as you don't push it too hard. At the same time, its suspension is not too stiff.

Yet the most sedate 911 of all time can transform into a beast in an instant, taking over the corners of the racetrack with razor-sharp precision. The 992 is a brilliant sports car even in its base version.

Porsche is confirming its strategy for special models: whether it is the Carrera T, S/T, Targa 4S Heritage Edition, Dakar or Sport Classic – Porsche no longer only caters to its die-hard fans, but offers suitable models for all tastes, from the everyday car to the track-oriented GT3 RS.

Weaknesses: The 911 is already extremely advanced in terms of technology: Whether it's active aerodynamics, driver assistance systems or rear-wheel steering - when buying a used car, you should know what features are available and check their functionality in advance. Increased oil consumption (Turbo and GT3 models), software problems, such as with over-the-air updates (OTA), gearshift problems with the PDK transmission or confusing driver assistance systems are possible.
