The first 911 is the final straw. Decades of dreams, childhood memories and a constant fascination with the design, technology and sound of the six-cylinder boxer engine ultimately come together in the desire to own a 911.

But that emotional charge has the potential to lead to destructive decisions. The best example: the 996. As the first water-cooled 911, it is the most affordable ticket into the world of the 911. Prices starting at 40,000 leva, however, should be seen not so much as a temptation as a warning sign of serious deferred maintenance.

To avoid a bad purchase, here is the basic information you need. Before you buy, however, you should seek expert advice. With their help, we have summarized the most important weaknesses of the last five 911 generations.

Goodbye to air cooling! What began 50 years earlier with the 356 – the first Porsche – ended in 1997 with the 996. That wasn’t the only significant change – the characteristic shape of the 911 was also fundamentally changed. The so-called “eyeball” headlights darkened the mood of 911 fans, and the strange appearance of the top model showed an unintended resemblance to the base Porsche Boxster. However, the 911 continued to drive brilliantly, received a facelift soon after and was a success, despite giving up air cooling and the classic design.

Weaknesses: Engine damage is a major problem with the 996. The 3.4-liter, and from the facelift onwards the 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engines have a problem with the pistons. The right cylinder block is usually affected, and the left exhaust is often clogged with soot from burning oil. Defective balance shaft bearings are also a cause of engine damage. A major engine overhaul costs over 50,000 BGN.
