The Toyota Corolla has gone down in history as the epitome of affordable, quality cars. The Auris E150 succeeded the Corolla E12 and was purposefully adapted to the needs of European compact cars. Its name comes from the Latin word for gold. Fortunately, used models are not so expensive in Germany, but the first generation, available from 2007 to 2013, is quite popular. In addition to the robust VVT-i petrol engines (from 99 to 147 hp), there are also less reliable D-4D diesels (from 90 to 177 hp) and a surprisingly efficient hybrid (99 hp petrol engine plus 82 hp electric motor), which can easily achieve fuel consumption below five liters per 100 kilometers. Common criticisms include the somewhat difficult-to-shift gearbox, problems with worn clutches, a clatter from the suspension due to worn bearings and signs of rust. The interior looks well-made, but the choice of materials is relatively budget-friendly. The engines usually run for an exceptionally long time without any problems, but buying an Auris without proof of maintenance is a risky venture.
