Predictable as a clerk, punctual as a watch… there are many reasons to choose the cheap used VW Polo.

Actually, I should know the answer to this question very well myself... even older Polos never sit idle at dealerships.

During my student years in the mid-90s, I reluctantly used the tram for the route between the dormitory, the university and the daily parties – it took a lot of time, and it is known that students never have enough time. Just like money… Therefore, the solution crystallized in the form of a VW Polo1.0 with a power of 45 hp and spartan equipment, bordering on an infringement on human rights. At the same time, however, this vehicle provided me with maximum mobility at minimal cost – what more does a student need?

Today's students, who find themselves in a similar situation, have it even easier - over the years, the aging Polo has become far cheaper, but not worse... In the statistics of the TUV (German Technical Supervision Authority), it occupies a worthy place among the group of vehicles that inspire confidence, and the only technically bad ones are the ones that have been deprived of any care and maintenance by their owners.

The small 45 hp engine behaves exemplary at the gas station

The one-liter engine is a model of gas stations and on good days can be satisfied with less than 6 liters of gasoline… However, it does not like long trips on highways. Although its 45 hp are far from the adjective “dynamic”, they are enough to break the timing belt and cause the need for expensive repairs. When the four-cylinder unit overheats, a new cylinder head gasket must be installed, which is also an expensive operation in the workshop. However, I know from personal experience that this relatively simple operation can be done on your own… Polo does not like the cold either, which can cause a number of quite harmless damage to engines. The clutch cable in the Polo is not one of the most reliable connections between the transmission and the pedal – regardless of the type of engine running under the hood of the car. In this case, however, it is a simple design that allows the replacement to be carried out in a short time.

The ABS system, which has been offered as standard since 1997 (previously for an additional fee), is an important factor in managing dangerous situations on the road, and therefore we would not recommend buying a Polo without ABS. Speaking of equipment, we would recommend that you do not skimp on a model with power steering - you will congratulate yourself on your choice during every parking maneuver... Air conditioning systems, on the other hand, are a good thing, as long as they work. Unfortunately, this rarely happens with older models, which is most often due to their neglected maintenance. In any case, it is worth testing the system properly before buying.

Polo without oil leaks is only found in old brochures

There is no Polo without oil losses – even if they are within acceptable limits… Naturally, this is a good argument for reducing the price and a relatively easy-to-remove drawback – most often it is only necessary to tighten all the bolts of the oil pan on the crankcase and things start to look different. The situation is more unpleasant when oil leaks between the engine and the transmission, which means that the shaft sealing ring must be replaced. And before that, the gearbox must be dismantled….

My Polo, by the way, suffered the same fate – after prolonged use, it was given to my girlfriend, who, after numerous damages to the metal sheets, still managed to get money for it… The Polo remains a sought-after car. Its owners know why…
