The stylish VW and the hot Porsche (retrospection)

VW and Porsche – weren’t there some strange common games between them? That’s right, in 1969 the two companies launched a joint project called the VW-Porsehe 914, which later found a continuation in the symbiosis of Audi and Porsche, called the 924. The first sold poorly, the second – well. And here, VW and Porsche recently continued their strategy of cooperation with the Touareg and Cayenne duo. At Porsche, the new SUV successfully compensated for the decline in sales of sports cars, and at VW it managed to win over completely new layers of buyers for the brand.
But which is the better luxury SUV? A difficult question that everyone can only answer for themselves. It turned out that even some of the most ardent Porsche fans preferred to buy the Touareg. Not because it is cheaper in Germany by a little over 1,000 euros, but because it offers better workmanship and the materials in it seem to be of higher quality. Only its payload of 425 kg (Porsche – 590 kg) sounds a bit ridiculous in this class of cars.
The Zuffenhausen company supplies bare bodies from the Touareg factory in Bratislava, decorates the skeleton with 911-style elements and implants its own V8 engine in it. Many people seem to like this, but others don't, and in their opinion the Cayenne can only serve as a trailer tow truck to take the racing 911 to the Nürburgring.
In terms of off-road capability, the two models are on the same level. Both the Cayenne and the Touareg are capable of taking part in expeditions, but they are mainly driven on city boulevards.
In this natural environment for them, the Touareg looks more harmonious and with clearer accents than the Porsche-branded model, which looks more like a raised high 911 with two-wheel drive and a station wagon body. On the other hand, it has better dynamic characteristics and more direct steering. Its engine sound is thicker and its reactions are more spontaneous. When it comes to guarantees, VW again offers more.
An interesting dilemma arises: VW is more beautiful and cheaper, and Porsche is faster. The best would be a symbiosis. Therefore, we have a proposal for tuning companies: buy a Touareg and graft the power unit of the Cayenne S into it. This is what the ideal sports SUV should look like.
