C-Max faults according to TÜV

The Ford C-Max impresses as a family van with plenty of space, flexible seats and surprisingly agile handling. In the test results, it shows some durability. However, the lighting, axle suspension and exhaust system often show weaknesses. Overview from the TÜV report for 2026

Ford C-Max

production period: 2010 to 2019

engines: 85 hp (1.6 Ti-VCT) up to 182 hp (1.5 EcoBoost, 1.6 EcoBoost)

price: from 2000 euros

This is: the big brother of the compact Focus, with which the model shares its technology. It is also a compact MPV with a simple exterior, a high seating position and a smart interior design. The second generation was offered in two versions: the standard C-Max and the Grand C-Max, which is 14 centimeters longer. The latter has sliding rear doors and an optional third row of seats. The multi-award-winning and economical EcoBoost turbo engines are considered quite reliable. With the facelift in 2015, Ford gave the second generation a modified exterior, Euro 6 engines and a refreshed interior. The more dynamic-looking Sport variant appeared in 2018.

It can: provide a balanced and agile ride, thanks to its successful suspension setup – although this can reveal its uncomfortable side on very bad roads. The steering wheel is quite direct and provides sufficient feedback. Not so good is the severely limited rear visibility. The 150 hp petrol engine is a good choice – it is neither slow nor overly explosive.

This creates annoyances: dead batteries, creaking doors and the quality of the interior materials. In the long-term test, the Grand C-Max had problems with the electronics – it received a rating of 4+. ADAC’s damage statistics report problems with starters and fuel injectors. There were several service campaigns (especially for models from 2015 to 2019): risk of engine overheating due to potential oil loss (cooling strategy), defective knee airbags and side airbags, as well as the risk of breakage and fire in clutch components.
