The end of an era: VW Touareg goes electric

Two decades later, it's time to say goodbye: Volkswagen is retiring the VW Touareg with the launch of a special version. It's called the Final Edition and is now available to order in Germany – priced at €75,025. Production of the large SUV with an internal combustion engine will finally end at the end of March 2026.

With the Touareg in 2002, VW entered the luxury car segment. Not only with the SUV, but also with the luxury sedan Phaeton, the brand was to be positioned higher in terms of both technology and image. And this idea worked: with over 1.2 million vehicles sold in 39 countries, the Touareg has become one of the most successful luxury SUVs in Europe.

VW Touareg sets standards

The first generation of the model set new standards with its air suspension, electromechanical body stabilization system, off-road capabilities and powerful engines such as the V10 TDI with 313 hp or the W12 with 450 hp. The successor, launched in 2010, was characterized by more space, a higher level of comfort and the brand's first hybrid drive. Since 2018, the third generation has been available with a digital cockpit, modern assistance systems and plug-in hybrid power.

To mark the farewell to the Touareg, VW is providing it with an exclusive special version. Final Edition lettering is placed on the rear doors, sills and leather gear lever. The interior features multi-colored ambient lighting, illuminated decorative elements and high-quality materials – standard from the Elegance line upwards.

Top model: Touareg R eHybrid with V6 petrol engine and electric motor

The Touareg R eHybrid will remain at the top of the range until the very end of production. Its powertrain combines a V6 petrol engine and an electric motor, delivering up to 462 hp and delivering an electricity consumption of 15.2 to 14.8 kWh, to which is added 5.2 to 6 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

Whether used as a comfortable long-distance vehicle or as a trailer tow vehicle (with a payload of up to 3.5 tonnes), the Touareg has been setting standards for three generations. With the “Final Edition”, an era is coming to an end. The future is all-electric – the successor will use the SSP platform.
