Following a time-honored tradition adopted by older generations from the 1950s and 1960s, three main body styles are also offered here - sedan, station wagon and coupe with a choice of gasoline or diesel (in this case turbodiesel) engines.

The 406's styling was heavily influenced by that of its predecessor, the 405, which gradually began to be phased out of production after the 406's launch in September 1995 and ultimately ended its career in 1997 when the last station wagon models rolled off the assembly line.

The initial equipment levels are three: SR, ST and the top SV. The Peugeot 406 has many advanced additional features, such as electric seats with memory, rain sensor, electronic suspension control, speed-sensitive power steering, and rear window wiper on the sedan. A factory "tuning" body kit is also available.

The front suspension is MacPherson, while at the rear Peugeot has implemented an all-new and exclusive multi-link suspension called RS10, which consists of three wishbones and one trailing arm. Thanks to its special characteristics, it can provide greater negative toe-in on the outside wheel for stability in corners and greater negative camber for stability when the rear lifts during emergency braking.

The Peugeot 406 debuted on the Bulgarian market during the annual motor show at the Festival Hall in June 1996. An interesting detail from the ten-year industrial career of the Peugeot 406 is that this is another company model entered in the record books. In August 2002, a standard 406 HDi set a world record for the longest distance traveled on a single tank of fuel. The car traveled through Australia between Melbourne and Rockhampton, covering a total of 2,348 km.
