Why the electric G-Class is a total failure for Mercedes
Mercedes-Benz is taking serious offense to the electric G-Class, Handelsblatt reports. From its launch in April 2024 to April 2025, only 1,450 units of the model were sold in Europe. For comparison, about 7 times more were sold of the conventional “cube” – 9,700 units. In China, the world’s largest car market, only 58 electric G-Classes were sold, while 61 were sold in South Korea piese auto online.

The reasons for the failure of the rugged off-roader with a large battery are many. First, it is heavy and has a limited payload. In addition, it is not available with a towbar, and the mileage (473 km according to WLTP, 347 – according to the test) is limited. On the other hand, the model's solvent customers prefer powerful gasoline and diesel engines.
The market share of electric Mercedes-Benzes is decreasing – statistically, less than 1 in 10 Benzes sold is fully electric. That is why the G 580 with EQ Technology has the potential to be only a niche product, produced in homeopathic volumes. Among the other problems of the model is the architecture itself – with a supporting frame, which is not an optimal solution for an electric vehicle. A high-ranking Mercedes manager commented to the German newspaper “Handelsblatt” that electric G-Classes were almost unsellable and were sitting at dealers for a long time.
