Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) is an innovative technological solution that makes riding a motorcycle easier and more comfortable by automatically activating the clutch. The main components of the system are two electromechanical actuators that take over the opening and closing of the clutch and the gear changes of the 6-speed gearbox. The need for a manual activation lever is eliminated, making starting, stopping and manoeuvring easier. Automated Shift Assistant also takes into account the engine speed and load to optimally select the gear and shift point for maximum precision.
Thanks to ASA, the rider is less involved, which increases the pleasure of riding the motorcycle. Also, the Automated Shift Assistant creates an even more direct connection with the powerful boxer engine, due to the precise clutch control, ensuring precise control of the motorcycle, just with the throttle and, if desired, the foot shift lever.
When M mode is selected, the system allows gear shifting via the left foot lever, as in a conventional gearbox, but without the need to manually activate the clutch. This allows the driver to choose the moment of shifting. In D mode, the system demonstrates its advantages. The shift points are selected by the engine's electronic control unit.
In both modes, M and D, the rider enjoys perfect shifting. The result is efficient acceleration of the motorcycle and additional stability. When changing gears, for example, the jolting characteristic of a classic manual gearbox is largely eliminated. Accordingly, the risk of contact between the passenger and rider's helmets is also eliminated. The advantages are also evident when downshifting, where the chance of chassis imbalance is minimized. The shifting characteristics differ depending on the selected riding modes. ASA, together with Active Cruise Control and the Forward Collision Warning system, are shaping the future of connected functions on motorcycles.
Automatic clutch operation and shifting, guaranteeing a new feeling behind the wheel
Sometimes, in more complex situations, operating the clutch and gear lever requires a lot of concentration. For example, when you are traveling with a passenger and a lot of luggage. In such situations, the Automated Shift Assistant gives you additional freedom and contributes to greater driving pleasure. You simply step on the gas and the powerful boxer engine pulls you forward almost effortlessly, no matter whether you are starting from a slope. The system is also particularly useful on difficult terrain and off-road driving.
Electromechanical actuators for clutch control and gear shifting
The Automated Shift Assistant is a logical technical evolution of the BMW Motorrad Shift Assistant Pro. Two electronically controlled actuators operate the clutch and shift gears, ensuring easy starting and automatic gear changes.
When the foot shift lever is pressed, a sensor registers the command. Additional sensors determine the input shaft speed and the clutch position. These values are registered by the TCU (Transmission Control Unit), which is connected to the engine control module, for modeling and controlling the clutch, shifting and status.
The clutch is actuated by an electromechanical actuator with a hydraulic system with a direct connection between the master and slave cylinders. The actuator regulates the required clutch slip, activates it when changing gears and opens it when braking.
In M mode, the rider can move the shift lever in the desired direction in the usual way. If the engine speed is within the range of the desired gear, the shift is performed immediately. If the engine speed drops below the minimum for a given gear, the shift is performed automatically, even in M mode.
In D mode, gears are changed automatically depending on the selected riding mode, engine speed, throttle position and lean angle of the motorcycle. Shifting is done according to the specific situation and dynamic requirements.
